He also made it clear that Simon Peter was the apostle to the nation Israel. Paul made this statement in Romans 15:15–16, “Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to me of God, that I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.” Paul made it very clear here that he was the apostle to the Gentiles. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans is both an epistle and a letter. To Paul the gospel was the great ecumenical movement and Rome was the center of that world for which Christ died. Nevertheless, Romans contains the great gospel manifesto for the world. The Lord is speaking to us personally in each one of these very wonderful letters that Paul and the other apostles wrote to the churches. These letters that we have-these epistles-are so warm and so personal that, as far as you and I are concerned, it is just as if they came by special delivery mail to us today. However, a great many scholars today think this is an entirely false division. Having examined the papyri that were found at Oxyrhynchus in Egypt, he made a decision between literary and nonliterary documents, placing the epistles of Paul in the latter category, thereby making them letters rather than epistles. He gave the Gospels, and now we come to a new section: the Epistles, the majority of which were written by Paul.Īdolf Deissmann tried to make a distinction between epistles and letters. He gave history, He gave poetry, and He gave prophecy. He gave the Pentateuch-the Law-through Moses. God has used many ways to communicate to man. With his writings we actually come now to a different method of revelation. Let me say just a word concerning Paul the apostle. Take for instance, Milton, Dante, Homer, or any of the Western poets. We have paintings of sublimity elsewhere in all nations, but almost without exception you will find that their ideal is to grasp the sublime in the muscles.Doing and suffering are inseparably joined. “To be weak is to be miserable”, says Milton. The only saint is that soul that never weakens, faces everything, and determines to die game. The only good man I had any respect for was Satan. When I was a boy I read Milton’s Paradise Lost. Milton says, “No light, but rather darkness visible.” Kalidasa says, “Darkness which can be penetrated with a needle,” but none comes near this Vedic description, “Gloom hidden in gloom.” I remember three poets’ attempts to picture this. “Gloom existed first.” Those of you who have ever been in India or any tropical country, and have seen the bursting of the monsoon, will understand the majesty of these words.Fortunately for India, however, she has never produced a Milton, with his ‘hurled headlong down the steep abyss’! The whole of that were well exchanged for a couple of lines of Browning!”.In this article we’ll collect Swami Vivekananda‘s quotations on John Milton and Paradise Lost. We all know about famous English poet John Milton (9 December 1608 – 8 November 1674) and his epic poem Paradise Lost.
